Factors Affecting Emergency Evacuation: Floor Plan Cognition and Distance

چکیده
People tend to take their spatial cognition and wayfinding behaviors for granted while moving about in familiar spaces or traversing regular routes (e.g., the way work). However, when an emergency occurs, even if people evacuate from a venue, they are still likely experience unexpected irreparable tragedy. This study conducted on-site experiment survey investigation. First-person view (FPV) floor plans were adopted develop relevant experiment, which was then used investigate relationship between behavior two influencing factors: plan distance. The t-tests accompanying questionnaire indicated that women (31%) better than men (5.3%) legend recognition (25.5%) outperform (7.1%) orientation; both findings achieved significance consistent with results of previous studies by neuroscientists. One-way ANOVA showed participants read difficult understand (not FPV), took considerably more time (153.82 s) reach closer staircase those who easy headed farther (113.40 s). understandability is key affecting public’s evacuation time.

Granular Floor Plan Representation for Evacuation Modeling
In this paper we describe the architecture of a simple evacuation model which is based on a graph representation of the scene. Such graphs are typically constructed using Medial Axis Transform (MAT) or Straight Medial Axis Transform (S-MAT) transformations, the former being a part of the Voronoi diagram (Dirichlet tessellation) of the floor plan. In our work we construct such graphs for floor p...

Protective actions for hurricane threats are a function of the environmental and information context; individual and household characteristics, including cultural worldviews, past hurricane experiences, and risk perceptions; and motivations and barriers to actions. Using survey data from the Miami-Dade and Houston-Galveston areas, we regress individuals' stated evacuation intentions on these fa...
متن کاملFactors Influencing Failure Emergency Evacuation in Work Environments during Fire
One of the necessary measures of saving human life in emergency situations, such as fires, is the safe and swift evacuation of people. The prerequisites for this are to anticipate, identify, and eliminate factors preventing people from leaving buildings in a timely and safe manner while moving them to a safe place [1]. The occurrence of errors caused by engineering, design, human, and psycholog...
متن کاملAgentive and Contextual Factors Affecting Metaphorical Cognition
According to contemporary theories of cognition, the process of metaphorical interpretation is conceived of as a 'mapping' from a source domain to a target domain. The author of this paper believes, in contrast, that this process of mapping does not take place in a vacuum, but rather is influenced by both agentive and contextual factors. By the agentive factors of metaphorical cognition, she re...
متن کاملUniversal Factors Affecting Emergency Department Crowding
I read with great interest the article entitled “Application of Queuing Analytic Theory to Decrease Waiting Times in Emergency Department: Does it Make Sense?” in the autumn issue of Archives of Trauma Research (1). As an emergency physician in the United States, I can share the frustration of the authors that throughput of patients in the emergency department can often be hindered by numerous ...
